Police Beat • 05/07/2026

Fraud
A student received a call from an unknown number claiming to be the police and demanding money to prevent criminal charges. Recognizing the scam, she provided only minimal personal information and did not fall for the fraud. The case is being reviewed by investigators.

Duress Alarm
Officers responded to a silent duress alarm at the WSC in room 2400. Upon contact, employees explained they accidentally triggered the alarm by bumping it. The incident was determined to be a false alarm.

Suspicious Circumstance
An anonymous tip was received by the police regarding a potential hidden camera in a women’s restroom. An officer responded to the location to investigate. After a thorough search of the restrooms, no cameras were found. The officer did note a broken tile and a sprinkler head that appeared out of place but found no suspicious devices upon inspection. Building care will follow up on the broken tile and sprinkler head.

Medical
BYU officers and EMS responded to a male who had fainted in an LSB Lab. After evaluation, EMS cleared him on scene with no further action needed.

Lost Property
A faculty member in the Electrical and Computer department lost key #9270 (copy #32) sometime around May 22, 2025. The key was lost while he was moving and he couldn’t locate it. It was reported to the key shop.

Hazardous Condition
BYU officers responded to assist a student locked out of a room where a helium tank hose had burst and was leaking in the EB. Due to the potential hazard, the Provo Fire Department was called in to assess and shut off the tank. Risk management and police administration were also notified.

Fire Alarm
A smoke detector alarm was reported at the RB from room 185, followed shortly by a motion alarm from room 134. Both areas were inspected, but no smoke or apparent cause for the motion alarm was found. The building manager was on scene and mentioned that the same alarms had been triggered recently without any smoke detection. The alarm technician was notified.
