Fire Officers responded to assist Provo Fire Department with a dumpster fire located north of the Richards Building on the BYU campus. Fire personnel extinguished the fire, which was contained within a plastic dumpster situated in a concrete enclosure away from nearby structures. Due to the minimal contents inside the dumpster, fire personnel believed the fire was likely caused by discarded chemicals, possibly acetone, that combusted after being mixed and disposed of. The materials may have originated from a work crew resurfacing a dance floor on the north side of the Richards Building. BYU Physical Facilities personnel were notified and will follow up with the contractor or work crew. Photographs of the dumpster contents were taken and attached to the report. At this time, the incident does not appear to involve criminal activity or gross negligence.
Traffic Accident An officer responded to Parking Lot 7 to investigate a non-reportable traffic accident involving two BYU-owned vehicles. The officer gathered information from both parties, documented the incident, and provided the involved individuals with the case number for reference.
Fire Alarm An officer was dispatched to the Tanner Building in response to a fire alarm. Upon arrival, the officer contacted a BYU electrician who was already on scene and silenced and reset the alarm. The electrician advised that the alarm had been triggered due to construction activity in the atrium area and stated that crews were in the process of bypassing the affected alarm system to prevent further activations related to the construction work. No emergency conditions were observed.
