Information The BYU Police Department received a report from an athletic department employee regarding a potential identity fraud scam. Family members of football players had received phone calls from an individual impersonating a staff member, claiming that the athletes were in trouble and requesting assistance. It is unclear whether the scam involved soliciting money. The athletic department is actively reaching out to other parents to warn them of the situation. No monetary losses have been reported at this time.
Animal Problem An officer was dispatched to the parking garage of the Tanner Building in response to a report of a deer inside. Upon arrival, the officer located the area and observed that the deer had already left the premises on its own.
Medical BYU Police and BYU EMS responded to the Wilkinson Student Center, Room 3263, for a medical incident involving a 14-year-old female who had passed out for an unknown reason. During assessment, it was noted that the patient was on anxiety medication and had not eaten much throughout the day. The patient was not transported to a hospital and was released into the care of a responsible individual.
Welfare Check Officer responded to a report of a suspicious blue Toyota parked at Lot 52 all day. Upon arrival, the officer contacted the occupant, who disclosed she was employed by an engineering firm conducting a traffic survey on Wymount Drive. The individual provided valid credentials confirming her purpose.
Citizen Contact Officers were dispatched to the Engineering Building for a report of a possible suspicious/homeless male in the atrium. Officers contacted the individual who stated that he was living on the streets. The male stated that he was working on an academic paper. The male was also worried that gangs were x-raying him and lasering him. Officers told the male that BYU was an open campus if he was not disturbing academic activity. The officers also told the male that the building closed at 2200 hours and to make sure he was out by then.
Juvenile Problem A law enforcement officer responded to a report from an FSY counselor regarding inappropriate comments directed at a participant by other boys. Despite attempts to contact the participant’s parents, messages were left with no response. The officer assessed the situation as non-criminal, and FSY officials indicated they would relocate the participant and address the behavior of those involved.
Suspicious Three unknown individuals were reported to be suspicious near Maeser Hill. Officers responded, interviewed the caller and witness, and searched for a backpack believed to be left in the area. Surveillance footage revealed that the subjects had not left any items but had made concerning comments to the witness. There is no ongoing threat to the campus or community. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the individuals involved and gather further information.
Breathing Problem A report regarding an FSY counselor with minor breathing difficulties while attending an FSY dance at JFSB. The patient was assessed and treated by Provo EMS on-site and was released to staff.
Medical Officer responded to RB Field alongside Provo Fire, but arrived to find that the patient, who appeared to have a sprain, had already left with their spouse.
