Found Property An officer responded to a report of found property after staff located a backpack containing a laptop. Several items inside the backpack identified the owner. Due to the late hour, the officer sent the owner a text message advising that the backpack had been secured and could be retrieved later that day at the Police Department.
Accident An officer responded to a two-vehicle accident in Lot 45. No injuries were reported by either driver. The accident met reporting requirements, and a report was completed documenting the incident.
Property Damage An officer responded to Lot 52 to investigate a property damage incident. A BYU Grounds employee operating a lawn mower accidentally struck the front fender of a parked vehicle, causing minor damage. The officer documented the incident, collected the necessary information, and photographed the damage. Efforts are being made to identify and contact the vehicle owner, and the officer is following up on the case
Suspicious Circumstance An officer responded to the Cannon Center regarding a report of a suspicious beeping noise coming from a backpack left in a hallway cubby. Before the officer arrived, the complainant called back and reported that the owner had retrieved the backpack and left the building. Dispatch subsequently canceled the call, and no further action was required.
Accident An officer was contacted by a university employee regarding a traffic incident that occurred near the JFSB and West Campus Drive at approximately 8:00 a.m. The employee reported that while making a left turn, a male riding an electric skateboard collided with the university-owned vehicle, causing a minor dent to the hood. The rider picked up the skateboard and left the area without speaking to the driver. The employee requested that the incident be documented in the event the rider later reports the collision.
Extortion An officer met with a complainant regarding an extortion incident that began through a fake Instagram account and later continued on Tinder. The unknown individual persuaded the complainant to send personal images and then threatened to release the images and ruin the complainant’s life unless money was provided. The complainant sent money initially but refused further demands, ended all communication with the suspect, and responded to the station to file a report. An investigation has been initiated.
Welfare Check An officer was dispatched to conduct a welfare check on a reportedly homeless male on the east side of the Life Science Building. Upon arrival, the officer contacted the individual and determined he was a student waiting for his instructor and had camping gear with him. The individual did not require any assistance.
Agency Assist An officer responded to the MTC to assist a sick missionary. Provo EMS arrived on scene, evaluated the patient, and determined that further medical care was needed. The patient was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for additional treatment.
Accident An officer was dispatched to Parking Lot 1 to investigate a traffic accident. Both vehicle owners were present and provided their personal and insurance information. The officer documented the information, along with the observed vehicle damage, and completed an accident report.
Medical Assist An officer responded to the Y Trail near Turn 6 after receiving a report of a serious injury involving a youth group participant. The individual was climbing on a rock when it shifted and rolled, causing significant injuries, including a broken leg and arm. Provo Fire personnel treated the patient on scene and transported him to Utah Valley Hospital for further medical care. Officers responded with the BYU Police UTV to assist with transportation and the movement of fire equipment.
