Welfare Check A BYU officer responded to Heritage Halls to perform a welfare check on a male student reported to be struggling with depression. The call was made anonymously via text, with the caller expressing concern but not wanting to speak directly to an officer. The officer located the student, who was walking outside, and engaged him in conversation. The student shared that he was feeling stressed and anxious about his classes and had been walking for about 90 minutes, possibly causing concern among his roommates. He confirmed he was not considering self-harm or suicide and declined counseling services, stating he had a good relationship with his bishop. The officer walked with him to his room, where he agreed to stay under the watch of his roommates, who consented to monitor him and contact authorities if needed. The student was also given the officer’s contact information for support
Information A female student visited the Police Department to report her ex-boyfriend, also a BYU student, for sharing a recorded private conversation with his friends, her family, and her fiancé. She was referred to the BYU Victims Advocate and referred to Title IX for further assistance. The officer documented the case and reviewed it with both Provo City and Utah County attorneys, who ultimately determined that the incident did not meet the criteria for a criminal offense.
Theft A BYU PD officer assisted a student in recovering their lost AirPods on campus. The officer identified the individual who had found the AirPods but had unlawfully retained them instead of turning them into lost and found. Respecting the Complainant's wishes, the officer warned and educated the individual about the theft of mislaid property. Ultimately, the AirPods were returned to their rightful owner.
Accident A BYU PD Officer took a traffic accident report in lot #2 involving a cement base for light pole. There were no injuries, however, there was property damage.
